Steve Albini played in his own bands, but was best known as the producer of iconic albums such as Nirvana’s “In Utero” and the Pixies’ album “Surfer Rosa”. Now he has died at the age of 61.
The American indie rock icon Steve Albini is dead. The musician, music producer and sound engineer suffered a heart attack on Tuesday night, his recording studio Electrical Audio told the German Press Agency. Albini was 61 years old.
The California native founded the punk rock band Big Black and later the group Shellac in Chicago in the 1980s. But he was best known as the producer of iconic albums, including the last Nirvana album “In Utero” (1993). He had previously recorded the successful studio album “Surfer Rosa” (1988) for the indie rock quartet Pixies. Albini also worked with British alternative singer PJ Harvey, Iggy & The Stooges and hard rockers Led Zeppelin.
With his own trio Shellac, Albini has released several albums since the 1990s. The latest album “To All Trains” is scheduled for release in mid-May.
