People: Yvonne Catterfeld warns of social media traps

The Erfurt native is launching a new single. As a musician and actress, she sees advantages from Instagram and other social media. But she also has a critical eye.

Musician Yvonne Catterfeld has an ambivalent relationship with social media platforms. “Instagram and the like are now part of the game for artists and enable us to show our personality in a self-determined way – to set the limits ourselves as to how far we can go privately. I think that’s a good thing,” said the 44-year-old in the dpa interview about her today released single “Move”. “But sometimes it really is a waste of time and you could be doing better things with your time than passively watching others live.”

The mother of a ten-year-old son is worried about the possible effects of social media. She sees a particular danger for young people who do not yet have strong character, as they learn to only define themselves through comments and likes. “And it’s not just young people who fall into the traps, we adults too.” Filters, for example, give the illusion of a different reality. “It’s good to keep reminding yourself that it’s a marketing platform.”

Catterfeld, who was born and raised in Erfurt, Thuringia, is also known as an actress from the ARD crime series “Wolfsland”. Her albums “My World” (2003) and “Unterwegs” (2005) made it to the top of the charts. In 2021 she released her last album to date, “Change”. More singles are to follow this year, and a new album and a tour from spring 2025 are also being planned.
