People: Engelke about jokes from the past and lasagna on the sofa

Anyone who sees sketches or comedies from the past sometimes cringe. What was considered funny back then often comes across as completely out of place today. How is the comedian Anke Engelke doing with this?

After decades as an actress and comedian, Anke Engelke looks critically at some of the jokes from the past. “Of course there are sketches that have to be seen in a historical context. We used to laugh about things that we wouldn’t laugh about anymore,” said the 58-year-old from Cologne to the “Augsburger Allgemeine”. “Even the great comedians who are no longer alive did and said things that make us roll our eyes today.”

Engelke emphasized that this is not a matter of taste, but a question of attitude and common sense. “So we understand that some things are just not funny,” explained the actress. “But we need the silly humor that comes spontaneously from the gut and the infectious laughter that arises from a situation. That has to remain free.”

At the same time, Engelke is concerned about social interaction. “I see a growing brutalization in dealings, in communication, in actions, which we also saw in the attacks on politicians. I think that is alarming and worrying,” she explained in the interview.

Engelke with a bit of “Garfield”

The actress will soon be heard in the cinema again – in the animated adventure “Garfield – An Extra Portion of Adventure”. In the German version, the woman from Cologne voices the villain Jinx. In fact, she also has a bit of the lazy cat Garfield in her and likes to enjoy herself. “How long does it keep you happy just hanging out, chillaxing, eating lasagna and watching TV?” Engelke asked in the interview. “At the same time, I have an inner restlessness that asks: What could you actually be doing instead of sitting on the sofa?”
