ESC: Winner Nemo first breaks the cup – and breaks his thumb

Nemo brought Switzerland the ESC trophy – but unfortunately only in shards: Nemo destroyed his trophy while still on stage. But there was no bad intention behind it.

It was a moment of great triumph – and an embarrassing mistake. Nemo won the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) for Switzerland. But Nemo (identifies as non-binary, i.e. neither female nor male and therefore prefers the name instead of pronouns) didn’t have the trophy for long: Nemo broke the trophy while still on stage – in front of the audience. Nemo was obviously just too enthusiastic.

The breakdown happened right after Nemo’s victory lap. To celebrate the victory, Nemo was allowed to perform the winning song “The Code” a second time – and danced across the stage with the trophy. As Nemo sat on his knees belting out the final notes and enthusiastically shaking the trophy into the camera, it happened: with one swing, Nemo wanted to put it back on the stage – and broke the glass trophy.

ESC winner Nemo: short luck

Curious: In the live stream you can even hear the crunch of the breaking glass – despite the audience’s deafening cheers. The explanation should be simple: Nemo was holding the trophy in his hands with his microphone still switched on. And captured the moment of the mistake acoustically.

Most of the audience probably didn’t notice anything about it at first. Just a second after the breakdown, Nemo gets up again, only the remaining glass stump of the cup on the stage indicates a problem.

Injured winner with two trophies

In fact, the trophy wasn’t the only thing that broke in the mishap: Nemo also needed medical attention. “I also broke my thumb,” Nemo reported at a press conference. But Nemo doesn’t have to live with the broken trophy: “I got a new one. So technically I now have two.” Nemo took the opportunity to criticize the competition a bit. “The trophy can be repaired – maybe the ESC needs a little bit of repair too,” said Nemo ambiguously.
