The musician, who comes from Steyr and has lived in Vienna for twelve years, has left his mark with his band Catastrophe & Cure, as well as as the director of numerous music videos from Leyaa to Sharktank. Now he has only relied on himself and recorded an album with “Speedrunning” that is one hundred percent him. A conversation.
“Speedrunning” is a very catchy, pleasant to listen to album in which happiness and thoughtfulness meet. Was that a conscious step?
It’s like that because it suits me so much. They are topics that concern me and music that I like. 90 percent of the time I write the music first, and then when I start singing to it, it’s a lyric that feels like the music. I think the songs meshed together very well in this way. They all have similar melancholic moments.
“Speedrunning” could be interpreted as a metaphor for a life that is geared towards speed.
“Speedrunning” is a term from the video game world that means when someone completes a game very quickly. Games that would otherwise take 15 hours are suddenly completed in 40 minutes. When I saw this for the first time, I thought to myself that whoever does this doesn’t realize all the beauty and work that goes into the work. The song is about me being in my 30s now. It is also a metaphor for life. Everything happens very quickly. But I’m not sad that time feels like it’s going by so quickly.
Can you enjoy moments?
Yes, totally, I’m a big foodie. I always try to record things as they are. I try not to forget about enjoyment even in more difficult phases of life.
As a band musician, the solo could be because you didn’t want to make any compromises as a songwriter. Did the songwriter in you call for it?
Actually not. With Catastrophe & Cure I’m not primarily the songwriter; with my last band Lorbeeren it was divided into songs, where I wrote half of the songs, which wasn’t so compromising. You can write folk-pop-indie-rock alone on the guitar or piano and then it can be used as a solo project. I never really enjoyed writing in the rehearsal room. So not much has changed there.
