Those who want to become inhabitants of the United States must go through some tests when starting the procedures. The United States Federal Register reported that both the evaluation of English like the civic educationare mandatory and they underwent some changes this year.
Emigrate to the United States: the English exam for citizenship changes
The process of obtaining US citizenship involves passing an English exam, which is administered during the interview at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Previously, this exam assessed various language skills, such as understanding, reading and writing English.
However, a significant change has been implemented: the focus is now exclusively on oral expression. Applicants must prepare to be able to communicate fluently in English, prioritizing speaking skills over grammar or writing.
As announced by USCIS, applicants must respond in English using appropriate vocabulary and structuring simple sentences. One of the key exercises involves describing three random images shown during the exam, which adds a practical and visual element to the language proficiency assessment.
Emigrate to the United States: the civic education exam changes
As we already mentioned, the civic education exam is another of the tests that underwent some modifications. Until now, applicants had to answer six out of ten questions correctly to pass.

It is important to note that the passing standard remains the same: immigrants must answer at least six of the ten questions correctly to pass the exam. Now, with the new USCIS regulations, the test format has been modified to multiple choice, with four possible correct answers.
Immigrate to the United States: who can apply for citizenship

By birth abroad to American parents: Children born abroad can acquire US citizenship if at least one of their parents is a US citizen at the time of their birth.
- By place of birth in the United States or territories: This principle, known as “jus soli”, automatically grants citizenship to any person born on US soil or in its territories, regardless of the nationality of their parents.

By naturalization process: Lawful permanent residents, also known as green card holders, can apply for US citizenship after meeting certain requirements. These include maintaining continuous residence in the country as a permanent resident for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen), demonstrating good moral character, passing an English and civics exam, and demonstrating knowledge about the US history and government. They must also pledge to take an oath of allegiance to the US.
