In a rural area of ​​the province of Buenos Aires there is a small town of barely 1,500 inhabitants with a great historical legacy that is competing in the Best Tourism Villages for becoming the cutest in the world.

It is a little-known town that is part of the tourist region that makes up the Sierra de la Ventana system. We are talking about Saldungaray, a small town that was founded in 1900 by the Basque-French immigrant Pedro Saldungaray.

Likewise, its history begins many years before its founding, when it was only a place where the Fortin Pavón, which was very important during the time of the Government of Juan Manuel de Rosas.

As the years went by, Saldungaray grew and one of the key moments in its history occurred in 1903 with the arrival of the Railway that helped economically develop the town and the Sierra de la Ventana area.

The train passed through the Saldungaray station and through the Sierra de la Ventana region for a long time, until in 2016 the provincial government of María Eugenia Vidal closed the Ferrobaires company and all services to this area were suspended. Currently, neighbors make constant demands for the service to work again.

Tourism: what to do in Saldungaray

The main square, called Independence Squareis one of the tourist attractions of Saldungaray and from there you can see the Nuestra Señora del Tránsito church, famous for having an image of the Virgin Mary in a reclining position that is unique worldwide and was brought to our country from France directly by Pedro Saldungaray, the founder of the town.

Saldungaray is located on the banks of the Sauce Grande River and a nice walk is along its bed until you come across a majestic portal that was built by the architect Francisco Salomone and serves as the entrance door to the local cemetery.

To finish the visit to Fortín Pavón it is an attraction in itself: it is located one kilometer from the town and if you look at it unawares it is a group of simple wooden ranches with thatched roofs, but the place houses an important part of history Argentina and is very frequented by tourists who come to the area.

How to get to Saldungaray

Saldungaray is located 576 kilometers from the City of Buenos Aires and it takes about seven hours by car to get there, while the trip from Sierra de la Ventana is much shorter: just 9.6 kilometers, which can be traveled in approximately 11 minutes.
