Nemo wants to use his fame to fight for the causes of non-binary people. First of all, however, we need to relax from the hustle and bustle in Malmö.
Big cheers and lots of flags from the non-binary community: When ESC star Nemo arrived at Zurich Airport on Monday night, he was enthusiastically welcomed by more than 100 fans. Nemo won the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö on Saturday evening, bringing the trophy to Switzerland for the first time since 1988. Nemo (24) identifies as non-binary, i.e. belonging to neither the female nor the male gender, and prefers not to be called “he” or “she”.
The new fame should now help to advance the concerns of non-binary people in Switzerland. Unlike in Switzerland, since 2018 it has been possible in Germany to choose “diverse” or “none” in addition to “male” and “female” as was previously the case when entering the civil status register. “I am clearly in favor of a third gender entry,” Nemo told broadcaster SRF that night. This has to happen as quickly as possible. Justice Minister Beat Jans has already invited him to the interview. “Let’s get together soon and talk about queer rights,” Jans wrote to Nemo.
MP Barbara Steinemann from the right-wing SVP party is against further gender entry. Every person is already entitled to all basic rights. There is no need to change the legal system “for individual people”. “You can also exaggerate the protection of minorities,” she said in an interview with SRF. At the ESC flag entry in Malmö, Nemo brought the Swiss flag as well as the flag of the non-binary community in the colors yellow, white, purple and black onto the stage.
First on Nemo’s calendar was rest. “I’m going to go to the garden of my parents’ house, lie down and try to calm down a bit,” said Nemo. There is a lot to process. “To suddenly become a thing that transcends me is absurd.”
