Olivia Munn has undergone another surgery to battle breast cancer. After a mastectomy, she now had a hysterectomy.
In March, actress Olivia Munn, 43, revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent four surgeries, including a double mastectomy. Now the “X-Men: Apocalypse” actress is speaking publicly about a fifth surgical procedure: She underwent a hysterectomy in April. . “I had my uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries removed,” said the 43-year-old.
It was a life-changing decision – Munn can no longer bear a child. Nevertheless, it is the best way because the hormone estrogen on which the type of breast cancer that Munn was diagnosed with “feeds” is no longer produced in her body.
Family planning is not over: Olivia Munn has had her eggs frozen
Munn, who shares a two-year-old son with comedian John Mulaney (41), apparently wants more children. She reveals to “Vogue” that she has had her eggs frozen three times – at the age of 33, at 39 and most recently shortly after her cancer diagnosis at the age of 42. “John and I have talked about it a lot and we don’t feel like our family planning is complete yet, but we didn’t know whether I would need to have chemotherapy or radiation.”
However, the egg retrieval process wasn’t that easy: her doctor created a special protocol for cancer patients. Egg retrieval actually involves taking hormones, which could have caused Munn’s cancer to continue to grow. Instead, treatment was given with lower doses of hormones. “We just wanted a few more eggs,” said Munn. “At my age, one in ten eggs is healthy, and we hoped that we would get an embryo from this collection.”
However, due to the cautious cancer protocol, the doctors were only able to retrieve seven eggs. Three fewer than planned, but still successful: “A few hours later we received a call from my doctor,” said the 43-year-old. “He told us that we had two healthy embryos. John and I just started crying. It was so exciting because not only had we done it with a single retrieval, but also that I wasn’t putting myself at further risk had to. It was just incredible.”
Olivia Munn wants baby via surrogate
The plan now is to try to bring a baby into the world via a surrogate mother. It is a challenge to “find a version of yourself somewhere in the world. Someone who you trust as much as you trust yourself, to live your life as a pregnant woman the way you do.”
But she has become comfortable with the idea: “A surrogate mother is no longer a scary idea for me because I can’t do anything about it. I’m no longer able to carry a baby to term. So if we want to start a family, that’s ours only option,” says Olivia Munn.
