In Germany there has been a discussion for some time about how much one should work – and how much time there is for private life. The star violinist has a clear opinion on this.
Star violinist David Garrett doesn’t believe you can have a great career with a work-life balance. “Work-life balance will never create something unique,” said the 43-year-old musician in an interview with dpa. Maybe you can go through life well and relaxed with it, explained the well-known violinist. “But you’ll never have a great career with work-life balance, sorry,” Garrett said. “The younger generation has to go through this.” To create something ultimate, he believes, you have to “bleed.”
There has been a lively discussion in Germany for some time about the question of how the relationship between working hours and private life should be structured. This also includes a debate about the four-day week. The younger generation in particular is said to place more value on work-life balance.
Garrett said, “You can do a four-day week in your life.” But then you shouldn’t expect that “that will give you something financially” – “or career-wise.” You should seek something out by discovering your passion, Garrett said. “And then you have to work really hard.”
Already successful as a child
The 43-year-old has done a lot for his own success. The Aachen-born son of a German lawyer and an American dancer won his first competition at a young age. He has been performing in front of large audiences for years and has sold millions of records. Now Garrett has announced a new album and a new world tour, which is scheduled to begin in Munich in March 2023. He said he put a lot of time into the project. He started doing it in autumn 2022.
When asked about his childhood, Garrett said: “Strict. Incredibly strict. Incredible discipline.” He also practiced the violin until midnight.
“It’s just a different career,” said the musician looking back. “On the other hand, you don’t have to worry that there will quickly be a second person who can do what I do.” This path is rocky, hard and difficult. “And you also need a psyche for that. You have to be a really tough pig.”
