Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron: This is how the feud started on “Mad Max: Fury Road”

On the set of “Mad Max: Fury Road” sparks flew between Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. Director George Miller explains why.

The “Mad Max” spin-off “Furiosa” opens in German cinemas on May 23rd – but director George Miller (79) looks back on the filming of the predecessor “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015). In one he spoke about the argument between the two main actors, Tom Hardy (46) and Charlize Theron (48).

“They were just two very different performers,” George Miller told the newspaper. According to the Australian, Tom Hardy has a “damage” but also a “brilliance” that comes with it. “Whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer,” Miller recalled.

Dispute over Tom Hardy’s tardiness

Charlize Theron, on the other hand, was always the first on set. George Miller described her as “incredibly disciplined – a trained dancer, which showed in the precision of her performance.” Tom Hardy’s tardiness then sparked an argument between the main actors.

According to him, the situation escalated one day. Theron waited for Hardy in full costume for three hours. When he finally arrived, she insulted him violently. Hardy also reacted aggressively. Theron felt threatened and insisted that a producer be assigned to her as a female contact and mediator.

Behavior of the characters crept into the actors

George Miller explained to The Telegraph that the behavior of the stars is a reflection of their characters. After all, they played two characters who first have to pull themselves together: Tom Hardy as Mad Max and Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa, who only turns out in the course of the film that she is also fighting against the tyrant Immortan Joe.

This constellation of characters was transferred to the actors, Miller speculated in “Blood, Sweat and Chrome”: “The story is all about self-preservation: If it’s beneficial for you to kill another character, then you should do it “, and you don’t think twice about it,” the director is quoted as saying in the book.

According to Miller’s new interview, Hardy and Theron actually got together and tensions on the set subsided.

The upcoming film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is a prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Road”. It tells the backstory of the heroine played by Charlize Theron. “Ladies Gambit” star Anya Taylor-Joy (28) embodies the young Furiosa, while Chris “Thor” Hemsworth (40) plays her adversary Dr. Denial.
