Streep often sings in her films – as a child, the actress even had great ambitions as a singer. But then came high school.
Hollywood star Meryl Streep likes to sing – but for certain reasons nothing came of a singing career. “I love singing,” said the 74-year-old on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival. “I took opera lessons as a kid. I had a trained, mature voice. Then in high school I started cheerleading and smoking. Those two things kind of ruined it. But I didn’t really like opera anyway. I like rock ‘n’ ‘Roll and Joni Mitchell and stuff like that. But I love music and I believe that music and singing is a direct line to your heart.”
Streep talked about her time at drama school. One of her teachers gave the class the task of singing a song that would make everyone else cry. The male acting students initially made fun of it, but then gave very emotional performances. She herself chose the song “Lonely at the Top” by Randy Newman, she said, adding: “I meant it ironically because I was broke and all.”
