Quentin Dupieux, on the dream of eternal youth

Quentin Dupieux, on the dream of eternal youth

From the prolific French director, today a star in Cannes, his first film is released in Argentine theaters, “Incredible but true”, a comedy with fantastic components and very good humor

Original, prolific, creator of crazy arguments that basically suggest something quite focused, with titles like “Nonfilm”, “Rubber, the killer tire”, “The deerskin jacket”, “Smoking causes coughing” or “Daaaaaaali!”, Quentin Dupieux He is the fashionable auteur in French cinemas and at festivals around the world.

His new movie, “Le deuxième act”, the second act, had the honor of opening the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday. They have previously celebrated it in Venice, Montreal, Sundance, Mar del Plata and especially Sitges, where fans of fantasy and horror films come together.

Let’s clarify, His thing is not terror, but the ability to propose very real things from unreal situations., as happens in the film we now see, the first commercial release among us. Its titled “Incredible but true”and to maintain the surprise we will tell as little as possible.

Characters, a quiet, ordinary man; her boss and neighbor, who is a winner; the first’s wife, with the dream of looking younger; the second’s wife, who doesn’t waste time when her husband is away, and a real estate agent. He is the one who says the phrase in the title, and he does not say it to seal a sale, weighing the merits of a house, but rather after it has been sold, when the buyers are already taking possession but have not yet seen the basement. Not what’s in the basement, not what good can happen to them there. Or bad, but that depends on each person, because there is nothing diabolical in this, only human weakness.

The couple who bought the house experience that. The other couple lives something similar, but not thanks to a fantasy but thanks to the advances of Japanese medicine. In both cases, the weakness is the same, and it has to do with the dream of eternal youth. That, in short, is what the story is about, that and the pleasure of going fishing with the dog, among other things.

It is not a perfect work, because the author misses a cat that we do not know why he put it in (perhaps it was to create a false expectation), but It is a curious, unique work, and with two interesting details: the final moral, and the ability to make a well-made film with a tiny budget.. Interpreters, also low budget but all good, Alain Chabat, Léa Druckner, Benoit Magimel, Anais Demoustier and Stéphane Pezeratthe real estate agent.

“Incredible but true” (Incroyable mais vrai, France, 2022). Dir.: Quentin Dupieux. Int.: Alain Chabat, Léa Druckner, Benoit Magimel, Anais Demoustier, Stéphane Pezerat.
