Spacey speaks to a British newspaper about how his life changed after the allegations against him emerged. He says: “I work every day to become a better person.”
Actor Kevin Spacey (64) felt hastily judged after allegations of sexual misconduct against him emerged. In an interview with the British newspaper Telegraph he was asked whether he had the impression that the allegations had been inflated against the backdrop of the MeToo movement. “I think there was definitely a quick judgment,” Spacey replied. Companies like Netflix would have separated from him before even asking a question.
“All I ever wanted was for people to ask questions and investigate,” the actor said. “And I’m well aware that that didn’t happen.” In the approximately 45-minute conversation, Spacey said that if you ignore media and social platforms like Twitter, he has experienced a lot of kindness from people.
Several men had accused Spacey (“House of Cards,” “American Beauty”) of inappropriate behavior. He was acquitted in a trial in London last year. The prosecution painted a picture of a man who used his power to sexually harass men. Spacey denied the allegations and said it was consensual sex.
“I work every day to become a better person”
Spacey told the Telegraph that he fully accepted that he sometimes behaved badly. He sometimes found himself in situations, for example on set, in which he made jokes, for example, which was more common back then. Later, in conversations, he understood that some people felt belittled and made fun of. “That was terrible to hear,” Spacey said. That was never his intention.
These conversations were important because he was then able to discuss his behavior with his therapist, Spacey said in the video interview, in which he cried at times and also rejected allegations from a new Channel4 documentary. “I work every day to become a better person,” said the American. In the Telegraph, colleagues such as Sharon Stone and Liam Neeson spoke out in favor of his return to the screen.
