OpenAI acknowledged that they have received questions about how they chose voices for ChatGPT, especially Sky’s.
OpenAI is withdrawing the voice of ChatGPT known as Sky after users noticed the chatbot sounds incredibly similar to Scarlett Johansson. The AI company is putting the feature “on pause” but denies that the voice is a copy of the actress from “Her”.

“We believe that AI voices should not deliberately imitate a celebrity’s distinctive voice; “Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but rather belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural voice,” OpenAI wrote in a blog post on Monday. “To protect your privacy, we cannot share the names of our announcers”.

OpenAI acknowledged that they have received questions about how they chose voices for ChatGPT, especially Sky’s. In response to these concerns, the company has decided to pause the use of this voice while they address the concerns raised. This pause will allow the company to reevaluate its criteria and processes for selecting actors who lend their voice, ensuring that they align with the ethical and privacy expectations of users and the community at large.
Reality surpasses fiction
11 years after the premiere of Her, OpenAI introduced voice capabilities to ChatGPT in September 2023 by collaborating with casting directors and producers award-winners to create the voice selection criteria. The company received more than 400 voice and screen actor submissions, ultimately selecting five actors for the voices of Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper and Sky.
