The ““Grandchildren Law” is the nickname given to the Democratic Memory Law of Spain. This is a regulation that speeds up the process for obtain citizenship of the European country to the descendants of the Spaniards who migrated to Argentina during the 20th century. During this period, Argentina received hundreds of migrants fleeing wars.

This measure was promoted in 2022 by the government of Pedro Sánchez and remains in force until 2025. It was implemented with the objective of recognizing exile for political, ideological or religious beliefs. It represents the principles of truth, justice, reparation and guarantee of non-repetition and condemnation for the military coup of July 1936 and the Franco dictatorship.
The regulations allow descendants of Spaniards who had to go into exile during the Franco regime to access Spanish citizenship. This condition grants you full enjoyment of rights as a citizen born in Spain and gives the possibility of accessing other benefits such as: financial aid, health coverage and participating in the electoral rolls.

The Spanish Consulate indicated that The nationalization process is free, by the Democratic Memory Law. But it is a process that can take an estimated time between six months and a year. What you do have to pay for is the stamping for those who apply for a passport.
The necessary documentation for citizenship is:
- Birth certificate of the ancestor who was originally Spanish.
- Marriage certificate of the Spanish ancestor.
- Death certificate of the Spanish relative, if applicable.
- Birth certificate of the Spanish ancestor.
- Parents’ marriage certificate. If your parents are alive, photocopy of your ID. In case the father / mother of the Spanish child is deceased, death certificate.
- Birth certificate with the “Hague Apostille”. The procedure is carried out online in the TAD (Distance Procedures) system of the Argentine Foreign Ministry.
- Applicant’s identity document.
