After an old video from a surveillance camera was published showing rapper Diddy beating up his then-girlfriend Cassie, the musician himself spoke out online. A mistake, as Johnny Depp’s lawyer explains.
There are shocking images that made the rounds online over the weekend. They show rapper Diddy brutally beating up his former partner, Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura. Captured by hotel surveillance cameras, the footage has only now reached the general public, eight years after the incident. Even hardcore fans of the musician may reconsider their loyalty after watching the clip.
Diddy: Johnny Depp’s lawyer says apology video is ‘disingenuous’
The shock and horror of Diddy’s brutality was so great that the musician felt compelled to make a statement himself. He posted a video on Instagram apologizing for his behavior. From a purely legal perspective, this could be a mistake, says Ben Chu, who gained fame as Johnny Depp’s lawyer.
“It’s a scene of real brutality,” Chu told Law&Crime Network. “It’s one thing to read it on the printed page, which is bad enough, but to see it happen is horrifying,” the lawyer explains. However, if he were Diddy’s lawyer, he would probably have advised him against making the video statement. “He just threw out all sorts of objections to the authenticity of the video. And I don’t think what he said was helpful at all,” Chu said. Because even though the incident in the video is statute-barred, Diddy’s apology could still be relevant to other cases. The apology “smacks of absolute insincerity,” Chu said, and other people who accuse Diddy of wrongdoing could benefit “because it certainly gives more credibility to their claims.”
It was only in April that the musician’s lawyers announced that their client denied all allegations against him. Sean “Diddy” Combs sees himself as a victim, it became clear at the time. Diddy’s lawyer Aaron Dyer recently spoke of an “unprecedented ambush” and a “witch hunt” when he criticized the house searches by officers. Combs faces multiple lawsuits from people who accuse him of sexually abusing them. Combs has denied all allegations made against him.
In a 35-page indictment, Diddy’s ex-girlfriend Cassie accused the producer of psychological violence and manipulation at the end of last year. A short time later, both agreed to a settlement. Diddy said at the time that he had never been violent. The opposite has now been proven.
