The already glamorous Cannes Film Festival just got a little more glamorous – thanks to the Olympic flame.
On April 16th, the Olympic flame was lit in Olympia, Greece – over a month later, the countless torchbearers on their way to Paris have now made it to the Côte d’Azur and the Cannes Film Festival that is currently taking place there. The torch was carried along the red carpet on May 21 by French Paralympics star Arnaud Assoumani (38) and then ceremoniously raised by Delphine Ernotte (57), President of France Télévisions and the European Broadcasting Union.
The reason for the detour was the premiere of the documentary film “Olympiques! La France des Jeux”. The film by director Mickaël Gamrasni sheds light on the history of French athletes at the Olympic Games, with the internationally successful actress Marion Cotillard (48) serving as narrator.
Still a long way to go
At the end of April, the Olympic flame was transported from Piraeus to Marseille on board the French three-master “Belem”. The torch still has a long way to go until the 2024 Summer Olympics: the opening ceremony will take place in the French capital Paris on July 26th, and the sporting competition will last until August 11th with participants from over 150 nations. After 1900 and 1924, this is the third time that the Olympic Games have taken place in Paris.
The winners in Cannes will soon be announced
The Cannes Film Festival is now drawing to a close. The 77th edition will have its finale on May 25th. Then the international jury, headed by US director Greta Gerwig (40) and including Lily Gladstone (37) and Eva Green (43), will award the Golden Palm to the winning film. 22 works are in competition this year, including films by the old masters Francis Ford Coppola (85, “Megalopolis”) and David Cronenberg (81″The Shrouds”) as well as Giorgos Lanthimos (50, “Kinds of Kindness”).
