The comic book adaptation “Spider-Man: No Way Home” was the first film since the beginning of the pandemic to gross more than one billion US dollars (884 million euros) in cinemas worldwide. This was reported by the industry magazine “Variety”.
The adventure is the only film since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” that has exceeded this mark internationally. “The Rise of Skywalker” started in December 2019 and ran for several weeks without being affected by the pandemic. He holds an international box office of nearly 1.1 billion US dollars.
“Spiderman: No Way Home” is the third part from the comic house Marvel with leading actor Tom Holland (25), who had taken on the role of the spider man after Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. As such, the Briton was seen in “Spiderman: Homecoming” in 2017 and in “Spiderman: Far From Home” in 2019. His current film cracked the billion mark according to “Variety” in twelve days.
Only two other superhero films from non-Corona times succeeded: The two “Avengers” parts “Infinity War” (2018) and “Endgame” (2019) achieved this result after eleven and five days respectively. Previously, the new Bond film “No Time to Die” was the top-selling film in 2021. The thriller, which hit cinemas in early October, has so far achieved grossing US $ 774 million (EUR 684 million). According to insiders, “No Time To Die” would have to bring in $ 900 million to pay off. The Hollywood Reporter reported in November that Daniel Craig’s last appearance at the box office in 007 is expected to lose $ 100 million.
Incidentally, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is also extremely well received in Austria. On the opening weekend (December 18/19) with 110,000 moviegoers, Sony announced the best opening weekend of a film since the beginning of the pandemic. Further Spiderman films with Tom Holland are not excluded.
