Lenny Kravitz: The singing sex symbol turns 60

Lenny Kravitz follows a divine calling not only in his music but also in his body cult. He turns 60 on May 26th.

On his 60th birthday, US rock star Lenny Kravitz is in top form. While most of his colleagues at this age are already showing clear signs of rock’n’roll-induced decline, Leonard Albert “Lenny” Kravitz, born on May 26, 1964 in Brooklyn, New York City, is bursting with almost superhuman fitness and is living up to his reputation as the reigning sex god of the music world more than ever before.

Not only good music, but also cutting a good figure is an integral part of the program for the superstar, who has been residing in Paris and the Bahamas since 2008. As he repeatedly explains in interviews, everything he does, whether he is making music, building his muscles or working as a creative director for the champagne manufacturer Dom Pérignon, has a spiritual connection. As a creative person, he sees himself as a tool of a higher power in the studio just as he does on the weight bench or at a sparkling wine party.

“We are all spiritual beings”

In a statement about his new album “Blue Electric Light”, which he released two days before his big birthday, he described his view of things as follows: “I think as we get older it becomes important to go even deeper. We are all spiritual beings, but we have this human experience here on earth. We all have a gift. I believe that we have all been given a unique gift, but some of us miss the mark or do not make the most of that gift.”

The key to fulfilling this spiritual destiny lies above all in not looking to others for guidance, but in finding your own path. “I believe that we are strongest when we are authentic,” says Kravitz. “That’s why I try to go even deeper, to follow the path to my destiny, to simply keep learning and to improve myself along the way.”

Musicians as antennas of divine will

Against this spiritual background, his work as a musician inevitably appears to him in a divine context. “All in all, I am just an antenna,” says Kravitz. “All the music I have ever made is something that was given to me. So I don’t ‘write it.’ It is already written and is transmitted through me. The whole process is a spiritual exercise for me because I practice my faith by patiently waiting for it.”

One of the divine gifts that the artist, who is often referred to as a “sex god”, was given on his way is of course his body, blessed with above-average shape, with which he moves through this world. At the beginning of April, a photo of Kravitz caused a stir, showing him working out in a gym. The fact that the well-trained entertainer apparently does not take off his iconic outfit of sunglasses, leather pants and a mesh shirt that is as transparent as possible, even when he is on the weight bench, caused a lot of amusement.

His comment on the clip, in which the musician could be seen flawlessly lifting a huge weight, was no less revealing: “Thank God for today! I am grateful. I have never been better. There are no shortcuts, so seize your day. Anything is possible. Love!”

Sex icon in transparent mesh shirt

Lenny Kravitz is known to have consistently followed the principle that one’s God-given gifts must not only be nurtured but also celebrated, even with regard to his external appearance. An important role in this is played by the ultra-transparent mesh shirts that have become his trademark, which always allow a clear view of his chest muscles, which have been steeled by divine will and disciplined training. When he was awarded a star on the “Hollywood Walk of Fame” in Los Angeles in March 2024, his daughter Zoë (35) made it clear how much this revealing piece of clothing had burned itself into her life since she was born.

There, the actress said: “We’ve been through a lot. We’ve seen a lot. I’ve seen a lot. I’ve seen you change in the most beautiful ways, and I’ve seen you stay the same in the most important ways. I’ve seen you show up and take care of the people you love – I’ve seen your incredible dedication to your art, but most of all, I’ve seen through your shirts.”

Amidst the laughter of the assembled guests, she added: “According to my father, it’s not a shirt if it doesn’t show your nipples.” Even though she was sometimes embarrassed by her father’s notorious fishnet shirts, for example when he picked her up from school in them, she has now developed a great deal of respect for his choice of clothing: “You really pull it off,” said the proud daughter. “Your relationship with the fishnet shirt is probably your longest – and it works!”

Lenny Kravitz’ endless universe of love

Even 35 years after the release of his debut album “Let Love Rule” in 1989, Lenny Kravitz remains consistently true to his mission of bringing more light and love into the world through his work. His new album “Blue Electric Light”, which he gave himself as a gift for his 60th birthday after a six-year break from releasing anything, is again full of songs with titles such as “Love Is My Religion”, “Spirit In My Heart” and “It’s Just Another Fine Day (In This Universe of Love)”, in which boundless love is praised as the key to earthly paradise and catapulted into the hearts of his fan base with crisp funk grooves.

Even though Kravitz seems to repeat himself in his monothematic songwriting over the years, this fact should be treated with the same respect as the unwavering discipline with which he wears his see-through shirts. This man really does his thing – and despite all the posturing, he is a true hippie.
