Nicki Minaj arrested for drug possession in Amsterdam

Nicki Minaj was on her way to a concert in Manchester when she was stopped by police officers at the airport in Amsterdam – with drugs in her luggage.

According to media reports, US rapper Nicki Minaj was arrested at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport for possession of soft drugs and released after paying a fine. The singer published pictures on online services on Saturday of herself being questioned by officers. Police confirmed to the AFP news agency that they had taken a 41-year-old US citizen into custody, but would not confirm Minaj’s identity.

“We never confirm the identity of a detained person, but I can confirm that we have arrested a 41-year-old woman suspected of attempting to export soft drugs to another country,” said Robert Kapel, a spokesman for the military police. He added that questioning is still ongoing.

Nicki Minaj accuses police of calculation

Kapel later told AFP the suspect was released after paying a “reasonable” fine. “There is no reason for us to keep her in custody any longer. We have all the information for our file. Case closed,” he said.

Minaj told the online service X that the authorities had informed her that they had found cannabis in her luggage. According to the rapper, the drugs belonged to one of her security staff.

The pop star was on her way to a concert in Manchester, England, later on Saturday as part of her current world tour. On X, Minaj wrote that she had to go to a police station to give her statement. She accused the authorities of deliberately making her late “so they can write negative stories about me.”

Cannabis not always legal in the Netherlands either

A common misconception outside the Netherlands is that drugs are legal in the country. The world-famous coffee shops that actually sell weed are a big draw for cannabis smokers.

Consuming small amounts of cannabis is technically illegal in the Netherlands, but police do not enforce the law under a “tolerance” policy in place since the 1970s. Transporting the drugs to another country is illegal.

Minaj’s profanity-laced lyrics and unique vocal rhythm made her famous in 2010. Known for her daring clothing style with neon costumes and wigs, Minaj is considered one of the most influential rap artists worldwide. Her hits include songs such as “Starships,” “Bang Bang,” and “Anaconda.”
