Society: Bettina Böttinger supports CSD in Pirna

The former “Kölner Treff” presenter Bettina Böttinger calls for participation in the CSD in Pirna, Saxony. The background is a statement by the mayor, who is close to the AfD.

Television journalist Bettina Böttinger (67) has called for support for this year’s Christopher Street Day parade in Pirna, Saxony. The CSD demonstration in Pirna, which takes place on July 13, is an urgently needed statement for tolerance, respect and diversity, said former “Kölner Treff” presenter Böttinger to the dpa in Cologne.

As part of a “Tour for Tolerance”, supporters of the CSD want to travel by bus from Cologne to Pirna on July 13th to take part in the demonstration.

Mayor’s statement “unspeakable”

The CSD in Pirna is getting a lot of attention this year. According to an MDR report, the AfD-affiliated, non-partisan mayor of Pirna, Tim Lochner, recently criticized in a Facebook post that the local Protestant church had hoisted a rainbow flag on the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia on May 17. He linked this to swastika flags on the church during the Nazi era. Böttinger, who is herself married to a woman, criticized this as “unspeakable.”

The whole of society must defend itself against such statements, not just the queer part, because this is against tolerance and diversity itself. “When I see a rainbow flag hanging somewhere, for me that is also evidence of a basic democratic understanding,” said Böttinger. “The message is: all people who stand by our basic democratic values can live in this country – and that is a wonderful sign.”

Christopher Street Day takes place every year in many cities around the world and commemorates the events of June 28, 1969: Police stormed the New York gay and lesbian bar “Stonewall Inn” on Christopher Street, sparking protests by gays, lesbians and transsexuals that lasted several days.
