The internet has been in a frenzy over the past few days. A video was published from the island of Sylt showing young, presumably well-off people partying and singing a racist song. Celebrities are also reacting.
In the last few days, it seemed as though every social media channel had seen a group of young people chanting right-wing slogans to the song “L’amour toujours” by Gigi D’Agostino. The song’s demand was: “Foreigners out.” Of course, many celebrities also have a clear opinion on this incident, which they share publicly.
Natascha Ochsenknecht in particular has spoken out in a detailed video on Instagram: “It’s clear – what happened on Sylt is a complete catastrophe. What I can’t understand is that there are people around and that no one reported it, that no one said ‘Hey, watch out, you’re doing absolute shit’, that no one called the police (…)”. Uwe Ochsenknecht’s ex-wife, who is known for her clear words, makes it clear in her video that this behavior paints a very different picture of people who have money. It is not primarily poor people or people who have little education who propagate racism. “The fish starts to stink from the head,” says the former model.
It starts at your own front door, says the 59-year-old, it’s all about your behavior: “How do you deal with your neighbors?”, for example. “Sylt is everywhere,” she says.

But the mother of three finds the “hypocritical apologies” the worst. She now sees apologizing as standard behavior in various situations in life, which should immediately solve the problem: “Yes, I apologize for the mess I made, but an apology should come from the bottom of my heart (…). Anyone who says something like that should also face the consequences. No amount of apology will help.” Actress Nova Meierhenrich commented on the video: “Very true words, my love!”
Former model Monica Ivancan also posted an excerpt from an NDR article about the racism incident on Sylt and wrote in the caption on Instagram: “I have just seen this deeply disturbing video from Sylt and I have to say that it hits me deep in my heart. I feel anger and sadness at the same time. I cannot understand how anyone can sing, celebrate or find such slogans funny.”
Monica Ivancan also wants to use her post to point out that she too finds it strange how a person can watch such a scene without doing anything: “It is equally incomprehensible to me how someone can stand by, not intervene and still film the whole thing without interrupting it. Such scenes have no place in our society. Each of us has the responsibility to stand up against racism and not look away. Silence is not an option!!! I am deeply ashamed when I see this video. We are better than this!!!! Racism and xenophobia have no place in our society.”
Meanwhile, presenter Mola Adebisi shares a song written by influencer Jean Pearl, who immortalized her statement on the incident in a sung reel:
