How Prince Harry prevented a clarification meeting with William

Prince Harry liked to portray his brother William as a stubborn, angry man in his memoirs, but a royal book says that the older brother was actually interested in clearing things up.

Prince Harry first hinted at a difficult relationship with his older brother in 2019, during an interview just months before he and Meghan stepped down from their royal duties. He told ITV that he and his wife were “struggling” with the stresses of life as working royals, and mentioned that their sibling bond had both “good days and bad days.”

In 2020, the Sussexes pulled the plug and moved to America. From this point on, the decline of the sibling relationship began to become public. The very strained relationship between Prince Harry and Prince William reached a climax at the end of 2022 with the release of a Netflix documentary about the emigrants and then crowned in January 2023 by Prince Harry’s memoirs.

Valentine Low’s book “Courtiers: The Hidden Power behind the Crown,” which was released in late 2022, claims that Prince William sought a conversation as early as 2019 after Harry’s first interview with hints of sibling problems, according to the British news portal “Mirror.” The author says Prince Harry was initially open to the offer of a conversation with William, but then turned it down. The reason for the rejection was his growing concern that news of their meeting could leak out through royal staff.

Prince Harry was afraid that the meeting would become public

In his documentary and book, Prince Harry later accused the palace of deliberately leaking his stories to the British gossip press to distract attention from themselves. In this case, too, the younger brother is said to have had this suspicion: “The day after the interview was broadcast, William wrote his brother a WhatsApp message and asked if he could visit him. At first, Harry agreed. But after they spoke again and Harry asked who William would tell about the meeting, William explained that he had to clear his schedule and therefore told his private secretary. Harry then said, ‘Don’t come.’ He was so worried that William’s team would leak the visit to the press that he decided not to go on the meeting so as not to take any risks,” says Low.

The book adds that the lack of a face-to-face meeting was “heartbreaking” news for people close to the two brothers. It also shows that some members of the royal family have difficulty communicating directly in the face of tight scrutiny. The relationship between William and Harry has apparently long been strained, despite their close bond in their younger years.
