People: TV chef Johann Lafer wanted to become a priest

In the Catholic Church, Johann Lafer found what was denied to him at home. He even wanted to find his professional home there, the TV chef revealed in an interview.

TV chef Johann Lafer had very different career plans: he actually wanted to become a priest. The 66-year-old revealed this to the radio station rbb88.8 in the show “100% Promi”. “I found the love in the Catholic Church that I didn’t have at home. The care I experienced there touched me deeply and I am still grateful for that every day,” said Lafer. However, his career dream never came to fruition for economic reasons at home.

At first, Lafer experienced few positive emotions in his parents’ house – his search for love is still his “drive for success”. “At some point my father saw something of mine on TV and started to cry,” said Lafer. “Only then did he understand and acknowledge what I was actually doing. That touched me deeply. It shows that honest, heartfelt praise was missing.”

The Austrian chef can currently be seen on television in a completely different role than usual. In a guest role as head chef in the ARD telenovela “Rote Rosen”. “When they asked me if I wanted to take part, I first thought it was ‘hidden camera’, but then I said yes. I had no idea how it worked,” said Lafer.
