Retirement at 60? Doro Pesch doesn’t think much of that. In an interview, the singer talks about a historic event that she almost missed, a traumatic experience and unfulfilled dreams.
Doro Pesch, how loud will it be on your birthday?
I know that my friends, the Wacken people, are planning something. I played at the Wacken Festival for the very first time in 1993, when it was still very small, and most recently last year, as a headliner for my 40th stage anniversary. There are a lot of old friendships there, and there are also very loyal fans from all over the world, from America, Brazil, England and Scandinavia. We will have a neat parade through Düsseldorf’s old town.
You have just signed the Golden Book of your hometown Düsseldorf.
Crazy, right? Who would have thought that we would one day be so accepted with heavy metal and hard rock.
You mentioned your stage anniversary. How did you last so long?
It was really easy. I’ve always taken great pleasure in making people happy. When I see how much power it gives the fans, how happy it makes them, then I’m the happiest person in the world. That’s how I felt from the first day on stage. I’m a music fan myself. It started for me when I was just three years old.
Your first favorite song?
“Lucille” by Little Richard, I was immediately into that as a little kid.
Did you meet him later?
I messed that up a bit. I was in the USA and recorded a record with Gene Simmons from Kiss. He said that Little Richard was staying in the hotel across the street and that I could go and say hello to him. I kept putting it off until it was unfortunately too late.
You also almost missed a major historical event because of your work in the studio.
