The upcoming film about demon-possessed people and the Jesuit priests who dispute them is billed as “a completely new story set in the Exorcist universe and is not a sequel to The Exorcist: Believer 2023,” according to the press release. The film will be produced by Trevor Macy on behalf of Intrepid Pictures and Flanagan through his new Red Room Pictures banner. John Scherer will also work on the film on behalf of Intrepid.

The project represents the fourth team-up between Flanagan and Blumhouse: the filmmaker wrote and directed Oculus (2013), hush (2016) and Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016). All of these films were produced by Macy’s.
Flanagan said: “The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker and it’s an honor to have the opportunity to try something new, bold and terrifying within its universe. Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I have done some of my favorite work, only makes this more exciting.”
“Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable to horror fans and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse. “I immediately responded to Mike’s new vision of the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it,” said Blumhouse boss Jason Blum.

The failure of the last Exorcist film
The news comes after David Gordon Green abandoned the Exorcist franchise earlier this year due to the poor performance of last year’s “Believer” at the box office. A trilogy was originally planned for Green’s films, with a sequel titled The Exorcist: Deceiver (something like The Exorcist: Liar) previously announced to arrive in 2025. That film has since been scrapped following Green’s departure from the franchise.
