The finest craft from the underground

“The Raw Stuff” awaits you with more than 300 works of art that were created for almost 150 bands. And what kind of bands they are: Blink-182, Lagwagon, NOFX, Pearl Jam, Pixies, Sum 41 or Queens of the Stone Age. What sounds like a line-up of a festival with international appeal is complemented by local people, including Texta, Russkaja and Voodoo Jürgens.

What they all have in common is that flyers, posters, posters and album covers do not see any marketing means, but the chance to spread art. This is where the twelve Austrian representatives between the ages of 30 and 45 come into play, which Thomas Gasperlmair introduces. You will be hired to conceive and design these media as illustrators. “The Raw Stuff” is the first book of its kind in Austria. It moves between an illustrated book and a collective biography, a retrospective and personal stories about the path to art. These usually read like love letters to comics, science fiction and the culture of the post-grunge era. Once even like one at a brewery in Delaware that gave us the chance to sign for a major US act. This is supplemented by insights into artistic processes between purely digital drawing and screen printing.

The 34-year-old Gasperlmair brought to light a strong Upper Austrian participation. In addition to the Engelhartszeller Stefan Beham, who is increasingly known as SBÄM, Lisa Arnberger (“Missfelidae”), Christoph Kaderle (“Chrizao”) and Camille Blanchemain from Linz will be presented. Michael Hacker, who worked for Green Day, for example, graduated from the Linz Art University. According to Gasperlmair, Andreas Haslauer (“Epileptic.Media”) only started painting in the state capital – he beautified the facade of the KAPU, which was an important station for almost every illustrator in the book.

Echo from all over Europe

Gasperlmair was concerned that his work would ignite. But the response was overwhelming. So far, orders have come in from the USA, England, Italy and France. Gasperlmair asked the artists whether the buyers could be family and friends. No. There were simply interested people who grabbed art for bands as well as musicians all over the world.
