Gustavo Gauvry. The sound engineer who recovered and reassembled the LP.
But the story does not end badly, since in 2020 the tapes of that unique session reappeared in which Pappo and Juanse were accompanied by Black Amaya (from Pappo’s Blues) on drums and Fabián “el zorrito” Von Quintiero on bass and keyboards, and Gauvry endeavored to accomplish a laborious task of reconstruction, taking the originals recorded live in stereo by the four musicians and completing missing parts or sonic ups and downs with current technology and the support of Juanse. So the best Argentine rock album of 2021 is without a doubt, and from the colorful cover, “Juanito y el Carposaurio”, which already surprises from the instrumental intro that Pappo plays, a cover of “Diamond Dust” by Jeff Beck . And right away Juanse is singing the classic “Dulces 16” and soon Pappo takes the lead on an old song, “Sexo y Violencia”. Sometimes both leaders exchange first voices for songs, as in the excellent long “Blues for Ms. Pauler”, and sometimes a song purposely tries to sound truly Stone, as when on side 2 they both do a truly and subtly grated “Under my thumb” by the Rolling Stones, perhaps one of the highlights of “Juanito y el Carposaurio”.
Gaudry tells of the emotion that Juanse felt when knowing that the tapes could be recovered, and surely this fragment of a past totally different from the one he lives in his current evangelical existence must have been shocking to him, as when he sings “Poca vida”, the fierce rock ‘n roll on a guy whose neighbors think he’s selling drugs but he swears he doesn’t. And Carpo, who spent time in England with Peter Green from the first Fleetwood Mac and also played with BB King in the United States, has no problem singing some of the songs in English, as in the case of “Too Much to Drink”, auto cover of his anti-alcohol song “Drink Too Much”.
In fact, each one of the 16 tracks on this unmissable rock and blues album has something distinctive, and they all sound good, thanks to the great effort of Gustavo Gauvry assisted by Juanse so that a 30-year-old zapada can perfectly blend into a current mix. achieving the great rock album of 2021, which, as it should be from the beginning, ended up being an independent release from Del Cielito Records, since obviously the major labels commune less and less with the true spirit of rock’n roll.
