Evangeline Lilly has said goodbye to her career as an actress. However, the “Ant-Man” star left herself a small back door.
Actress Evangeline Lilly (44) has decided that after about 20 years in the dream factory it is time to call it a day. The star, who was part of two of the biggest franchises in recent cinema history with Marvel and “The Hobbit”, announced this decision to her two and a half years old – not with sadness, but with “joy and satisfaction”.
The star hinted at spiritual considerations as the reason for this step at just 44 years old: “Detaching yourself from the seemingly obvious choice (wealth and fame) can sometimes feel scary, but when you align with your dharma, fear is replaced by fulfillment,” Lilly explains. The term dharma comes from various Asian religions and can be understood as a personal code of values.
A long-held dream
In fact, Lilly immediately proved that she would have liked to retire from acting even sooner with an old video that she posted along with her caption. In the 2006 clip, which was shot on a beach, she is asked where she sees herself in ten years. Lilly’s answer: “I’m scared to share this with the rest of the acting world. But in the best case scenario, I would be a retired actress in ten years.”
Remarkably, at the time of the recording, Evangeline Lilly’s star had only just risen in Hollywood. Two years earlier, she celebrated her breakthrough thanks to the mystery series “Lost,” which she was part of from the beginning until the finale in 2010.
If her wish from back then had come true, she would have had to stop after the first “Ant-Man” film in 2015. She would then not have been on set for the two sequels “Ant-Man and the Wasp” (2018) and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (2023). Nor would she have seen “Avengers: Endgame” – the most commercially successful film in cinema history after “Avatar”.
What does the future hold?
For now, Lilly wants to focus on her family and humanitarian work. The 44-year-old at least partially allays her fans’ concerns that they may never be able to see her on screen again. At the end of her post, she says: “Maybe I’ll return to Hollywood one day, but for now, I belong here. A new season is here and I’m ready… and happy.”
