At a D-Day commemoration, Prince William was asked about the health of his wife Princess Kate. His answer apparently did not satisfy the inquiring veteran.
Since Princess Kate (42) announced in March that she was suffering from cancer, there has been little news about the 42-year-old’s health. The only thing that is certain is that she is undergoing “preventive chemotherapy”. At an event marking the 80th anniversary of “D-Day” in Portsmouth, England, which was also attended by his father King Charles III (75), Kate’s husband Prince William (41) did not want to comment on his wife’s health on Wednesday (June 5).
When asked by a veteran of the Allied landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944, whether the Princess of Wales was “better,” William gave an evasive answer: “She would have loved to be here.”
While King Charles appeared with his wife, Queen Camilla (76), heir to the throne Prince William appeared solo.
Prince William remembers veterans without a wife
During his appearance before the assembled surviving veterans of D-Day, he read an excerpt from a letter that a soldier had sent to his wife on the day the Allied troops landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944. Alastair Bannerman, as the soldier was named, was lucky to survive D-Day, the war and captivity and to return to his family. “Too many did not,” said Prince William. “We will always remember those people who served and those who had to say goodbye to them. […] Today we remember the courage of all those who crossed the sea to liberate Europe.”
King Charles also gave a speech at the commemoration – the first public speech for the monarch since his cancer diagnosis was announced. From a speech by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery (1887-1976), who was in command of the Allied ground forces at the time: “We have the honour of striking the blow of freedom that will live on in history.”
The other dates
On the morning of the actual anniversary of D-Day on June 6, King Charles and Queen Camilla will travel to the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer, France. It is Charles’ first trip abroad since he announced his cancer diagnosis in February.
Prince William, meanwhile, will attend the main event at Omaha Beach near Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer on behalf of his father, who is suffering from cancer. According to media reports, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (46), US President Joe Biden (81), Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (52) and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (65) will also be attending at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron (46).
