Musicians: 40 years of “Bochum”: Grönemeyer celebrated at the start of the tour

Herbert Grönemeyer made his breakthrough and set standards 40 years ago with the album “4630 Bochum”. At the start of the anniversary tour in Dresden, fans paid homage to him.

“Men,” “alcohol,” and “airplanes in the stomach”: Singer Herbert Grönemeyer has influenced more than a generation of concertgoers and can count on a loyal fan base. At the start of the anniversary tour 40 years after the release of the album “4630 Bochum,” the 68-year-old was celebrated extensively by around 26,000 fans in Dresden. “When you see so many people, you’re happy like a child,” said Grönemeyer on stage.

The first song he sang was “Das ist los an”, followed shortly afterwards by the first ballad “Sekundenglück”. During “Tanzen” the fans really got going for the first time, and during “Was soll das” the whole stadium sang along. About an hour after the concert began, the anthem “Bochum” was played – Grönemeyer always started by singing the Steigerlied.

The album “4630 Bochum” was in the album charts for 140 weeks. Since it was released on May 11, 1984, first on vinyl and later as a CD, it has sold more than three million copies and won gold records, according to the Universal label. The title song about the city that had such an impact on him has been heard for many years, and not just before every home game of the VfL Bochum football club.

Later on, Grönemeyer proved to be a guaranteed hit with his distinctive voice and interpretation. “Kinder an die Macht”, “Was soll das” and “Mensch” also achieved the status of folk songs.

The performance in Dresden is the first after a year’s break, Grönemeyer reports on stage. “I still have to manage my air a bit.” After Dresden, two concerts will follow on Saturday and Sunday in the sold-out Berlin Waldbühne. The four shows at the “home game” in Bochum in mid-June have also been sold out for a long time. In July and August, there will be performances in Stuttgart, Schaffhausen and Karlsruhe, among others.
