At the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy, several heads of state and representatives of the British royal family honored the last surviving D-Day soldiers and called for the defense of democracy. “The dark forces these heroes fought against 80 years ago never go away,” said US President Joe Biden at the US military cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer.

On June 6, 1944, the Allies landed on the beaches of Normandy. That marked the beginning of the liberation of France and Western Europe from Nazi rule. Tens of thousands died or were wounded. Around 150,000 soldiers, mainly Americans, British, Canadians, Poles and French, took part in the invasion.

US President Joe Biden stressed that democracy and freedom are still in danger today, especially because of the Russian attack on Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also took part in the celebrations.

170 veterans took part in D-Day

Around 170 veterans – all over 90 years old, some over 100 – took part in the ceremony at the US military cemetery. Their appearance was particularly moving, as many of them will probably no longer be present at future commemorations.

At the international memorial event on the nearby Omaha Beach in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, the British royals, French President Emmanuel Macron, his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Selensky, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and representatives of the Dutch royal family commemorated the liberation of Europe from the Nazis. Representatives from Moscow were not present because of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
