Ian McKellen’s condition to play Gandalf again in the Gollum movie

Sir Ian McKellen is willing to play Gandalf again in the film The Lord of the rings from 2026, “The Hunt for Gollum”, but just as Viggo Mortensenhas a condition.

In an interview with British newspaper The Times, the 85-year-old admitted that he approaches each new role as if it were his last, and that certain “movements in Tolkien land,” such as the film produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Andy Serkisthey are tempting.

McKellen assured that he would return as Gandalf under one necessary condition: “If I am alive.”

In recent years, McKellen has taken on six theater roles in three years, including Hamlet in 2021 and 2022.

“The Hunt for Gollum” was announced last month. In addition to Jackson, former Lord of the Rings stars are on board as producers and writers. The writers will join them Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.

In a statement, Serkis, who played Gollum in the original trilogy, said: “Yes, Precious. The time has come once again to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle-earth Peter, Fran and Philippa. The trilogy of The Lord of the rings of Jackson began in 2001 with the release of “The Fellowship of the Ring”. The film grossed more than $800 million worldwide and received 13 Academy Award nominations. They followed “The two Towers” and “The return of the King”which also spawned the prequel trilogy of the films “The Hobbit”.
