How much are Eberhoferkrimi stars Sebastian Bezzel and Simon Schwarz already in football European Championship fever? They revealed it in an interview.
Sebastian Bezzel (53) and Simon Schwarz (53) not only share a passion for traveling together, as they prove once again in the new season of “Bezzel & Schwarz – Die Grenzgänger” (from July 8th, 8:15 p.m., BR). The Bavarian actor and his Austrian colleague are also football fans. The two stars from the Eberhofer crime films revealed in an interview with spot on news how different their anticipation for the upcoming European Championship (June 14th to July 14th) is to date. They also remembered their first visit to a stadium and their most unforgettable experience at a previous European Football Championship.
How excited are you about the European Football Championship in Germany?
Sebastian Bezzel: I’m really looking forward to the European Football Championship. It’s just fun to watch a tournament in the garden with family and friends.
Simon Schwarz: I used to be a very, very big football fan, but unfortunately that has died down a bit. However, when it starts again, I’m sure I’ll be fully involved again.
How will you watch the games?
Bezzel: Preferably with a grill in the garden.
Schwarz: I am and will always be the type of person who wants to watch the game in peace. Preferably all alone. I would make an exception if there was a possibility of getting a ticket for the stadium.
Bezzel: Let’s see if I can find tickets somewhere…
What was your first stadium experience?
Bezzel: That was at the end of the 1980s in the Olympic Stadium in Munich during the game between Bayern and Bochum – I think Bayern won 4-0.
Schwarz: For me it was the game between LASK (Linzer Athletik-Sport-Klub) and Rapid Vienna with my uncle – and I was still very, very young.
Do you watch the games in fan outfits?
Bezzel: No, I remain neutral, I no longer wear a jersey… But my children keep the fan tradition alive.
Schwarz: No, I don’t have a fan outfit either. I watch rather boringly with water and the internet so I can access all the player information in case any questions arise.
Who do you think will be European champion in 2024?
Bezzel: My favourites are England, France and Spain.
Schwarz: I won’t say, but I already know.
How do you rate the chances that the DFB team or the Austrian national team will win the title?
Bezzel: For Germany it’s rather low, for Austria it’s even lower… But I’m happy to be wrong in this case and would be immediately convinced of the opposite, especially if Germany won the title.
Schwarz: I could imagine a lot of things happening to the DFB team. Austria has a very, very good generation, finally the right approach. However, I still have some doubts about the mental strength to implement this on the pitch.
What is your favorite team – apart from Germany (Sebastian Bezzel) or Austria (Simon Schwarz)?
Bezzel: Scotland. They have funny fans, an ancient football tradition and are staying in my hometown of Garmisch during the European Football Championship.
Schwarz: Patriotism aside, when every tournament starts, I find a team that wins my heart. However, it is not clear in advance which team it will be.
What has been your most impressive European Football Championship experience so far?
Bezzel: The semi-final in 1996, when Germany played against England in the old Wembley Stadium – Germany won on penalties.
Schwarz: The final match between Greece and Portugal on July 4, 2004 in Lisbon. I was in Vienna for a shoot and spontaneously decided to watch the game in a Greek restaurant. The rest is history. [Außenseiter Griechenland mit dem deutschen Trainer Otto Rehhagel wurde erstmals Europameister, Red.]
How emotional do you get when you lose or win?
Bezzel: I have my feelings very well under control now.
Schwarz: Unfortunately, very much so. It takes me about half an hour afterwards until I am able to integrate into society again.
Do you think that the 2024 European Championship can trigger a similar euphoria in the country as the 2006 World Cup?
Bezzel: Unfortunately, I don’t think so. The current mood is too negative for that… But I’m happy to be convinced otherwise in this case too.
Schwarz: The times are much harder, but yes, I think that when things are going well, the desire to have some distraction and diversion is great. Let’s hope for the best, that’s what I would wish for. May the best team win – or the Germans.
