In a current commercial, Lothar Matthäus plays the victim of a mistake. He humorously alludes to his argument with Uli Hoeneß.
World champion, record-breaking international player, world footballer – and soon possibly a sought-after actor? Former football superstar Lothar Matthäus (63) can currently be seen in an unusual setting in an advertising clip for the discounter Lidl’s own energy drink brand “Kong Strong”. In the spot in the style of “4 Blocks”, he slips quite convincingly into the role of a helpless victim who was previously kidnapped by three shady characters from the underground.
Matthäus plays himself and is initially held in a vehicle by the intimidating criminals and then tied up and taken to a clan boss in a warehouse. His followers proudly present their catch, but it is obviously an embarrassing misunderstanding: The boss did not send his subjects to get the real Lothar Matthäus, but only to get a drinks can printed with his likeness. This was still missing from his otherwise complete collection.

Even Lothar Matthäus himself can hardly believe his unfortunate situation and mentions a possible reason for his pain in horror. Matthäus and Hoeneß repeatedly clashed in public. The spot “4 Cans” is part of a campaign for the so-called legend cans from “Kong Strong”, which depict a total of five German football heroes: Gerd Müller (1945-2021), Paul Breitner (72), Miroslav Klose (45), Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (68) – and Matthäus.
