Klaus Töpfer: CDU politician dies at the age of 85

The CDU politician Klaus Töpfer is dead. The former Federal Environment Minister died at the age of 85 after a short, serious illness.

The former Federal Environment Minister Klaus Töpfer has died. The CDU politician died at the age of 85 on June 8th after a short, serious illness. The spokeswoman for the Federal CDU confirmed this on Tuesday in Berlin. The “Westfalen-Blatt” and the were the first to report Töpfer’s death. Töpfer was Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety under the then Chancellor Helmut Kohl (1930-2017) from 1987 to 1994.

From 1990 to 1998, Klaus Töpfer was a member of the German Bundestag. He was considered as a challenger to the SPD candidate Klaus Wowereit in the 2006 Berlin election, but ultimately declined to take on the top candidacy. Töpfer was committed to environmental issues well into old age, including at the United Nations. Töpfer has been married since 1968 and has three children and four grandchildren. He most recently lived in the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Höxter.

and paid tribute to his colleague: “Klaus Töpfer has achieved an enormous amount for environmental protection in Germany and worldwide. His commitment was exemplary right up to the end, across political borders.” He ensured that environmental protection was recognized as an overarching task: “A truly great man!”
