Céline Dion suffers from stiff person syndrome. She especially wants to fight for her children.
Céline Dion (56) wants to stay strong for her sons and fight a rare autoimmune disease with all her strength. This is what the singer says.
Céline Dion didn’t want her children to be afraid
Around six years after the death of her husband René Angélil (1942-2016), Dion was shocked to be diagnosed with stiff person syndrome. However, her symptoms, including muscle cramps and difficulty walking and breathing, had been getting worse since the 2000s. “At one point I could barely walk. And I was missing a lot of life. My children started to notice. I just thought, ‘Okay, they’ve already lost a parent. I don’t want them to be afraid,'” recalls the five-time Grammy winner.
The 56-year-old is fighting for her children René-Charles (23) and the twins Nelson and Eddy (13): “I let them know: ‘You have lost your father […]”I’m not going to die. It’s something I’m going to learn to live with,” the Canadian promised her sons.
She hid her symptoms for 17 years
In an NBC interview, Céline Dion previously revealed that she hid her illness from the public for many years. The autoimmune disease was only diagnosed in 2022, but she felt early on that her “body was abandoning her.” Her voice failed or she often stumbled. Then her husband became ill and she put her own health on the back burner: “My husband was fighting for his own life too. I had to raise my children, I had to hide. I had to try to be a hero.”
The singer will reveal even more details from her everyday life with the incurable disease from June 25th. Her documentary “I Am: Celine Dion” will be released on Amazon Prime Video.
