Film: Russell Crowe on new Gladiator: “A touch of jealousy”

Russell Crowe won an Oscar for his role as Maximus in the 2000 epic film “Gladiator.” He feels “a little uncomfortable” with the sequel.

Hollywood actor Russell Crowe says he currently has a certain amount of hostility towards the new “Gladiator” film. “I feel a little uncomfortable with the fact that they’re making another film,” said the 60-year-old, who won an Oscar for his role as Maximus in the 2000 “Gladiator” film, in the podcast “Kyle Meredith With…”.

A sequel to the epic film is due to be released in November, this time with Irish actor Paul Mescal (“Woman in the Dark”) in the lead role. “Gladiator 2” is about the adult Lucius, the nephew of the devious Commodus, who was played by Joaquin Phoenix in the original film.

Crowe: “But I can’t say anything”

Crowe has heard “some things” about the new film and cannot understand the “moral path” of a character in it, he explained. “But I can’t say anything, that’s not my place.” With an allusion to his toned body in the earlier film, the 60-year-old admits with a laugh: “I’ll be completely honest: There is definitely a hint of melancholy, a hint of jealousy. I remember when I had yearnings.”

For “Gladiator 2”, director Ridley Scott brought Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen and Joseph Quinn in front of the camera, among others, in addition to Mescal.
