ZDF has chosen “Glaubst du” as the official European Championship song. In an interview, the indie band Provinz talks about their thoughts on the tournament.
The Upper Swabian indie pop band Provinz has been on everyone’s lips for a long time – and now also in the ears of all football fans. This is of course primarily due to the official ZDF European Championship song written by Vincent Waizenegger, Moritz Bösing, Robin Schmid and Leon Sennewald. Keyboarder Robin and drummer Leon answered questions from the news agency spot on news in the run-up to the European Football Championship.
Why is “Glaubst du” the perfect European Championship song?
Leon: We wrote the song for our friends and family at home. But the feeling does have certain parallels to a home European Championship – a mixture of anticipation and nostalgia. ZDF also felt the same way and chose “Glaubst du” as the official trailer song.
There is a lot of nostalgia in the song. How did you grow up with football?
Robin: Football has always been a big topic for us. Both watching it and playing it with friends on the sports field. Almost every European Championship and World Cup – as far back as I can remember – has had scenes and images that have stuck in our minds to this day. Not just football scenes, of course, but much more the places where we saw it, the people we were with and the feeling we had.
What importance does football have in your life today?
Robin: I think we just really enjoy talking about it. (laughs) It’s fun and it distracts us from everyday life. It’s not like we watch every game, but it will probably always be a small obsession.
Which songs have potential to be European Championship songs this year? Do you have any all-time favorite football songs?
Leon: Soho Bani has made a new version of “Zeit, dass sich was dreht” with Herbert Grönemeyer. That’s definitely a candidate!
Do you think that the 2024 European Championship can trigger euphoria in the country like the 2006 World Cup? How do you experience the mood so far?
Robin: The 2006 World Cup was something very special and cannot be compared directly with the current situation. I still believe that this European Championship can trigger great euphoria! It is one of the few international encounters that is all about sport and shared passion. The idea still connects people.
How will you watch the European Championship games? Public viewing, in the stadium or on your sofa at home?
Leon: Public viewing or at home with friends. The main thing is that you share it.
Do you get emotional when you lose or win?
Leon: Being excited is what makes a game like this interesting. You get carried away. But beyond that, it’s just a game.
How do you rate the chances that the DFB team will win the title?
Robin: I think there is a good chance of getting far in this tournament. To win the title, everything has to be right and there has to be a flow, and it is definitely possible! My gut feeling is that I will reach the semi-finals.
What do you think of the DFB team’s squad? Do you have a favorite player? Do you miss a player?
Leon: The squad seems very balanced and has top players of international caliber in almost every position. It’s quite possible that France or England, for example, are individually better staffed, but that’s not everything in football.
Robin: Jamal Musiala is an outstanding player who, in my opinion, gets a bit of a bad rap in the public eye compared to Florian Wirtz. He is a real difference maker! Extremely confident on the ball, agile, has a good overview of the game and he has the ability to do something special! The most important thing is that he continues to believe in himself and feels the support.
Who will be European champion in 2024?
Leon: Whoever wins in the final.
Robin: If it’s not Germany, it could really be England again.
What does the rest of your summer look like, what do you have planned? And what about a new album?
Leon: The festival season has just started for us, which means we’ll be travelling a lot over the next few months and playing concerts. And in between we’ll be making new music and watching the European Championships. (laughs)
