A project seeks to make Mar del Plata the national capital of specialty coffee

Mar del Plata It is one of the Argentine cities that stands out the most, both for its beaches and for its nightlife and its gastronomic offer. In recent times, the sector of specialty coffees He grew up a lot in the spa city.

Due to the development of this sector, the Deliberative Council (HCD) proposes creating the “Specialty Coffee Week” in said city, which already has more than 40 specialty coffee shops.

According to the project presented by the legislators of “Create More Freedom” Emiliano Recalt and Cecilia Martínez “at the end of 2020 and beginning of 2021 Mar del Plata became the second Argentine city with the most cafes in Argentina”, only being surpassed by the City of Buenos Aires.

The project wants to celebrate the rise of specialty coffee in the city with promotions and discounts for a week.

Based on this growth that the sector had in the spa city, the legislators propose that the “Specialty Coffee Week” in the General Pueyrredón Party (Mar del Plata) with the “clear objective of making visible and promoting this flourishing industry that has been gaining followers in the city.”

Furthermore, they maintain that “With the growth of specialty coffee shops, the consumer will become increasingly demanding and there is a commitment from the baristas to create a solid coffee community.

The proposal establishes that different activities linked to the sector will be carried out for seven days, such as training, promotions and discounts, tastings, barista talks, among other. This initiative seeks to attract all types of audiences, in order to promote the tourist, cultural and gastronomic offer of said city.

What characteristics does a specialty coffee have?

A specialty coffee is one that has been produced with high quality standards at every stage of the process, from crop to cup. During the production process, sustainable and ethical practices are promoted, with a fair relationship with producers.

To be considered a specialty, you must obtain at least 80 points out of 100 in the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) scale.

Certain characteristics distinguish specialty coffee from commercial coffee and offer a unique experience to the consumer:

  • Hand-selected grains to ensure the absence of defects.
  • Grown at specific altitudes that favor its development.
  • Complex and well-defined flavor notes that can include fruits, flowers, chocolate, nuts, spices, among others.
  • Balance in acidity, body, sweetness and bitterness.
  • Roasting is specialized and often done in small quantities to highlight the unique characteristics of the bean.
