She rocked the world with the 4 Non Blondes. Now singer Linda Perry has revealed in a film documentary that she is suffering from serious cancer.
A top hat on her head and a voice that cuts right to the core: In 1992, Linda Perry (59) conquered the world with her band 4 Non Blondes and their super hit “What’s up?” More than 30 years later, she revealed in her documentary “Linda Perry: Let It Die Here” that she was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago. Her life prognosis at the time: just a few months.
The Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and producer received her shock diagnosis in the middle of filming her documentary, which had its US premiere last week. In 2021, Perry decided to have breast reduction surgery. In preparation for the surgery, she was diagnosed with breast cancer during a routine examination. “My doctor said the cancer I had was the type of cancer found in people who have six months to maybe two years to live,” Perry said in the film.
Double mastectomy saved her life
At the time, she called Don Hardy, the director of her documentary, told him the diagnosis and agreed to keep the camera rolling. “I said: let’s just do it.” Because of the limited treatment options for this type of cancer, Perry immediately decided to have a double mastectomy, she revealed. She had both breasts removed without hesitation and saved her life. “I’m so happy because there are so many women who don’t get this chance,” she says today.
World hits for Céline Dion and Co.
In 1995, Linda Perry left the 4 Non Blondes – which meant the end of the band. After the band ended, Perry initially tried to become a solo singer, but this did not lead to success. Her role as a songwriter and producer was different: artists such as Faith Hill (56) and Christina Aguilera (43) benefited from Perry’s flair for spine-tingling hits. In 2003, she even founded her own label and was the first to sign a then completely unknown British singer named James Blunt (50). Collaborations with Britney Spears (42), Gwen Stefani (54), Adele (36), Dolly Parton (78) and Céline Dion (56) followed, for whom she wrote the super hit “My Love”.
