“Inside Out 2”, when the brain becomes a teenager

“Inside Out 2”, when the brain becomes a teenager

The second part of the modern animated classic once again explores Riley’s mental “controls”, but now, as a teenager, everything has become more complex.

Nine years ago – on June 18, 2015, to be more precise – the animated film by Pete Docter “Inside Out.” He skillfully and pleasantly developed a theory typical of many children around the world, when asked how they believe the human mind works.

It’s easy, they answer, Inside the head there are little people sitting on a control table. They make everything go. Those little people, for Docter, are emotions. And in a healthy child, who feels loved and wants to have fun and play all the time, it is understandable that the predominant emotion is joy.

The author then put together a group of five basic emotions: Joy, which is in charge, Fear, Disgust, Anger and Sadness. And to illustrate the thesis, he put that team in his head and the story of a very nice 12-year-old girl, Riley. Until then, everything is fine.

But what happens when Riley begins puberty and that makes her insecure, nervous, answering, you begin to have new interests, you would like to be another person, have another character, and perhaps other friends? The girl wants to join a successful ice hockey team and, in the desire to achieve a new image and be accepted, she makes mistakes that can be serious.

That’s what it’s about “Inside Out 2”, which we now see. And what the little ones can see, even if they don’t fully understand it, and the older ones, who won’t understand it either, because in addition to the control table full of buttons there are the new and more complex emotions, the spheres of good memories, the spheres of shameful or negative memories, belief systems, memory stores, and a few other things that go entangling the mind and confusing not only the audience, but also our character.

It is not appropriate to anticipate too much. We will only say that there is a good lesson in sports (and sport has a lot to do with ethics and morality in general) and that in the successful team there are a muslim girl. She can be seen with the hijab on, but she only appears for a few seconds in a couple of scenes and in the second row.

Perhaps the production is testing what reaction there may be in certain sectors of the US about that girl and the team captain, to develop them further, or dissolve them, in the case of an “Inside Out 3.” And there is something else, but it is difficult to verify: a new character, Ansiedad, has a mouth wider than his face and a lot of teeth visible, just like Taraletti, a character from the comic strip “Don Pascual”, who appeared in the “Patoruzito” back in the middle of the last century. His creator, Roberto César Battaglia, one day left everything and went to the United States. There he dedicated himself to other things, he left the profession (but that does not mean that he has stopped drawing…).
