He is the new “Officer and Gentleman”: Miles Teller as Richard Gere in remake

In 1982, “An Officer and a Gentleman” was one of Hollywood’s most successful films. Now the classic is getting a new look and face.

It’s time to pine again: Richard Gere (74) is back in his smartest role. At least almost: Actor Miles Teller (37) takes over his role in “An Officer and a Gentleman”.

The film production company Paramount is updating the 1982 classic with American Teller as aspiring Navy pilot Zack Mayo. The 37-year-old is taking on the celebrated role of audience favorite Richard Gere in a modern interpretation of the classic. The dramatic romance was nominated for six Academy Awards at the time.

For Teller it is a return to the Navy

The actor, who has been married since 2019, is familiar with cadet life in front of the camera: As hotshot Navy pilot Bradley Bradshaw, he played a supporting role in “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022. The long-awaited sequel was a massive box office success, grossing over $1.4 billion worldwide. It also garnered six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

That’s what “An Officer and a Gentleman” is about

The classic film revolves around the story of Zack Mayo (Richard Gere), who wants to escape his seedy life in Manila’s red light district and enlists as an officer candidate in the US Navy. He doesn’t have an easy time in pilot training under Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.). Then he falls in love with Paula (Debra Winger), a factory worker who dreams of getting out of her small town. The romantic drama directed by Taylor Hackford earned $190 million worldwide.

Nothing is yet known about the planned publication period.
