Shocking news from Montenegro: Football goalkeeper and national keeper Matija Šarkić has died unexpectedly at the age of just 26. This was confirmed by his English employer, following initial media reports. The cult club expressed its shock in a statement and did not provide any information on the cause of death. The club will not make any further comments for the time being, it said.

According to a report by Montenegrin broadcaster RTCG, Šarkić died early on Saturday morning. He woke up at around 6 a.m. with health problems in a hotel in the city of Budva, after which his friends who were there immediately called an ambulance. The professional athlete died half an hour later. The report also states that Šarkić had dinner with friends in a restaurant the evening before.

Šarkić has already played for other well-known clubs

Only ten days ago, Šarkić was still between the goal posts for his country in the 0:2 friendly defeat against Belgium. His team narrowly missed out on qualifying for the current European Football Championship in Germany. Šarkić was born in Grimsby, England, and trained at top Belgian club RSC Anderlecht, among others. His professional career included Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Stoke City, Birmingham City and most recently the English second division club Millwall, where Šarkić played 31 games as the first-choice goalkeeper. He played a total of nine times for his country, Montenegro.
