It is the typical weather in the English capital, a mixture of pitch black, pouring rain and bright blue skies – just in time for the air show. But that does not stop the British royal family from celebrating the King’s birthday at the annual “Trooping the Colour” parade.

Princess Kate and King Charles have cancer. The public has known about this for months, but the princess is celebrating a comeback and is consciously stepping into the spotlight at a public event for the first time since her operation at the beginning of the year. While her husband, Prince William, takes part in the parade on horseback, she sits in the carriage with her three children and then watches the event from the window of a building.

Prince Edward also rode along for the first time this year. King Charles’ younger brother and his family moved more into the spotlight last year, as the illnesses of the leading royals and the departure of Prince Andrew, Prince Harry and Meghan led to staff shortages in the “Firm”, as the royal family is often called.

When the royal family appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the final air show of the “Trooping the Colour” parade, Duchess Sophie of Edinburgh, Edward’s wife, stood next to Queen Camilla dressed in yellow. While waving royally on the balcony and admiring the air show, Prince William probably talked to his sons about the planes, as he is, after all, a professional pilot himself.

The family around Prince William and Kate wore color-coordinated outfits, Prince George had gelled his hair especially for the occasion. Little Prince Louis didn’t fool around this time either. Only once, when the national anthem was playing, did his sister, Princess Charlotte, nudge him, apparently telling him to take his hands out of his pockets.

The King himself had tears in his eyes, probably from emotion, shortly before the family left the balcony together and returned to Buckingham Palace.
