In his first New Year’s address, Olaf Scholz speaks about the challenges of the pandemic and solidarity.
“The year 2021 was very challenging for all of us,” explains the new Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (63) in his first New Year’s address. In it he also speaks in particular about the cohesion of the citizens. “We are embarking on a new era,” says the 63-year-old. “A time that will be good if we actively shape it. […] I wish you all the best for the New Year. Especially health. My big wish for 2022: let’s stay together! “
The corona pandemic is “in our bones”. Scholz also talks about the devastating flood disaster: “As bad as both were – our reaction to it also contains a thoroughly positive message: As a society in Germany we have resolutely accepted these challenges. […] Our country stands together. What I perceive everywhere is a huge solidarity, that is an overwhelming willingness to help, that is a new move closer together and undercut. “
“Must be faster than the virus”
Scholz also thanks the helpers and medical staff in hospitals, medical practices and vaccination centers “for what you are doing for our country, for all of us”. He asks citizens to take the new restrictions “very seriously”: “For your protection, for the protection of your families. For the protection of all of us.” The vaccination is especially important. “Now it depends on the speed. We have to be faster than the virus,” explains Scholz. “Let’s do everything together – but really everything – so that we can finally defeat Corona in the new year.”
The Chancellor calls on critics of the Corona measures to be respectful to one another. There are different opinions, especially on a topic like the pandemic: “It’s often exhausting. But a strong community can withstand contradictions – if we listen to one another. And if we have respect for one another.”
