After numerous scandals, affairs and health problems, Spain’s King Juan Carlos I announced his resignation in June 2014. On June 18, 2014, he officially signed his abdication document. One day later, his son was ceremoniously sworn in and proclaimed King Felipe VI of Spain. At 46, he was the youngest monarch in Europe at the time – and he set out to save the image of the monarchy, which had been tarnished by his father’s misdeeds. His wife Letizia, whom he married in May 2004, and their two daughters Leonor and Sofía ensured that Felipe’s side was a shining example.
After the euphoria of the initial phase and some of Felipe’s radical decisions – he announced that he would renounce his inheritance and cut Juan Carlos’ salary to which the former king was entitled – the monarch is increasingly struggling with problems, including private ones. Recently there have been repeated headlines and revelations about an alleged marital crisis with Letizia. There is talk of numerous affairs and a possible separation. The palace has not commented on any of this so far. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Felipe’s swearing-in, we look back at the most beautiful moments of the historic day.
