Traditionally, the royal family honors hundreds with medals and awards for the New Year. This time there are eager fundraisers, a Spice Girl, Vanessa Redgrave and 007 star Daniel Craig.
Two fundraisers are the youngest people in Britain to receive royal honors. The eleven-year-old Tobias Weller and the twelve-year-old Max Woosey will be awarded the British Empire Medal for service to the local community, as announced by Buckingham Palace.
Max has slept in a tent every night since the beginning of the corona pandemic and has already collected more than 570,000 pounds (680,000 euros) for a hospice. Tobias, who is autistic and has cerebral palsy, has raised more than £ 157,000 for a children’s hospital and school from two marathons and a triathlon.
Traditionally, at the turn of the year, the royal family honors hundreds of people with medals and awards in the “New Year Honors”. There are also several celebrities among them.
Athletes, singers and actors honored
Tennis star Emma Raducanu (19) received a so-called MBE after her victory at the US Open, as did “Spice Girl” Melanie Brown (Mel B, 46) for her commitment to combating domestic violence. The MBE – “Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire” – is one of the lower ranks in the system of British Orders of Merit. Actress Vanessa Redgrave (84) has a higher honor. She was made a lady, the title corresponds to the chivalrous “Sir” for men.
To say goodbye to his role as James Bond, actor Daniel Craig is now drawing level with the legendary film character in real life. The palace made the 53-year-old, who was last seen as Agent 007 in “No Time to Die” this year, as Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. The same honor that diplomats are often given is held by the fictional Bond in Ian Fleming’s books and films.
The corona pandemic also plays a role again in the awards. Both the UK government’s chief medical advisor, Chris Whitty, and his deputy Jonathan Van-Tam, as well as their colleagues in Scotland and Wales, Gregor Smith and Frank Atherton, are knighted. The heads of the UK Health Security Agency and the Medicines Agency, Jenny Harries and June Raine, are made ladies.
