First gossip and then find it cool: that’s what Hamburg singer Jan Delay did with Birkenstock shoes. The victim of his jokes was singer and friend Max Herre.
For decades, the shoe rack of Hamburg singer Jan Delay (48) did not have Birkenstock sandals – until the birth of his daughter. “I always had an aversion to these shoes. I grew up in an alternative housing project, my parents were hippies. The house was built out of Birkenstocks, so to speak. I never wanted to have anything to do with them later on,” he said in an interview with the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit”. 30 years ago, he even teased his friend and singer Max Herre (Freundeskreis) about it.
“After my daughter was born, my parents came to Berlin, and on the way home from the hospital I said: “Mom, we’re going to do something really cool. We’re going to Alex, the Birkenstock flagship store.” So I bought myself a pair of Arizonas.” And immediately sent a photo to Max Herre. “I said: Look. The time has come.” The Arizona version of the Birkenstock sandals has two thick straps, each with a buckle.
Jan Delay has now started to appreciate the shoes from this brand. He thinks that women who wear Birkenstocks are simply cool. “I find bare feet disgusting. But Birkenstocks are like a good bikini for the feet. They manage to make nudity not look so obscene. They even make the feet look more beautiful than they are.”
